Default Fun but Quiet Morning at Joe Overstreet

I went to Joe Oversteet with a couple of photo friends and it was pretty quiet but got a few nice images.

These first two are early morning shot at the Lake Marion boat ramp. We had a rain storm move thru around 3am and all the birds were wet including the hawk.

The rest are from Joe Overstreet. Joe Overstreet is a five mile road with mostly cattle grazing. We find quail, meadow larks, sandhill cranes and sometimes eagles and Cara Cara. At the end of Joe Overstreet is a RV/boat ramp on Lake Kissimmee.

Nice assortment of birds Pat. i would say it was a great morning out.

Great images but the bobwhite quail is my favorite there.. Where I am we are at the upper East limit for them. I have never seen one in CT. They are actually become more rare across all their range.Nice find.

Thank you Al and you are right, it is getting increasing harder to find or at least here in Florida. It's a bird that needs room and it doesn't live in suburbia. I use to hunt quail when I was a kid with my dad. My dad's hunting ethics were you never shot a bird on the ground and you always left half the covey. Anyway you can generally find them along Joe Overstreet and the males are still calling for mates this time of year.

Agree with Al, a wild quail is a rare sight these days. If I see one here in Iowa it's something I actively tell people about. I saw three of them about three years ago. Will occasionally see one randomly in the fall, but almost never in groups. I saw a covey of maybe 10 or 12 about 20+ years ago from a deer stand. Went maybe 15 years before seeing another one. Had been an uptick until I saw those three a few years ago, but haven't seen any since. Glad to see they're hanging on somewhere! There's so little habitat here anymore for anything other than corn and soybeans that it's depressing.

It's sad Jacob, people are destroying too much wild lands. Some birds just can't survive like quail since they are seed/bug eaters and range a good bit.

Thank you Tom and I do basic edits including noise reduction with all my photos. For example this is the quail photo with no edits

    After basic edits

Even thru I shoot at 800mm (with a 400 prime plus a 2.0 TC) a quail is still a small bird so you have to crop in. I also remove some things like the quail had pooped on the fence post which you can see in the first photo.

lol! Had no clue you could remove stuff. Guessing you’re doing this on a computer? That will be my next move . So the tele converter work? They don’t distort?

Yes, I use a computer for all my photo editing. Al does also. I believe he mentioned using DarkTable for his photo editing.

If I recall Tom you are shooting with a Nikon D7500? If yes the Nikon TCs are hit and miss so depends on the copy. I am also a Nikon shooter and recently moved to the mirrorless side of Nikon and the TCs seem to be better. Note that a TC will increase your F-stop (less light). I shoot with a prime F4.5 400 and a 2.0 TC. With the TC mounted my F-stop is 9 and I get double the focal length which I love.

Hey Tom, it’s a good thing you did your research. You can’t put Nikon TC on a non-Nikon lens. And you can’t put it on every Nikon lens either.

Yes I realized that. Do I need a Tamron TC for this lens? Do they make something like that or are all TC made for prime type lenses?

I think that’s a great Al question, Tom. My gut feeling on this is both the TC and the Lens has to be from the same manufacturer. I have no clue if Tamron makes TC.
