Al, a green discus would be cool and maybe a black discus with some color. Personally when I had the black rams I preferred some color in them vs zero color. Just personal preference here.
Pata
Would you buy an all black Discus? Not talking about a sick fish.. but a discus that was selectively bred to be black
.
Its pretty much the only color we don't have
. That and maybe a true green discus. A few years back I thought we might have Black ones as there were some breeders working on. HALF blacks.... but that fizzled out.
If the market success of dark black mikrogeophagus rams are any indication of how Black discus would do in the market... It would seem we would have a superstar with Black discus.
Sooner or latter that mutation will show up... when it does, would you buy them?
I think I would . I initially did not see the black ram as anything special... but its grown on me immensely and offers so much opportunity for breeding. A double dark Discus would be in my tanks if I could afford one.

I would like to have a solid black discus if it were a fixed strain like BD and not PB based. I'm not a geneticist so I have no idea how to achieve this morph. As long as breeders have been trying, I guess they don't either, lol...
The rams I got from Liz grew on me instantly. Solid black with a velvety sheen. Unfortunately, I've seen some gold splotches being produced in the later generations, but that could have been from a single pair because they're all mixed in together. Jack T really likes them as well but he can't get any fry for some reason. Mine spawn regularly but I don't have tank space so I've been giving him the egg dish and they've been hatching out at his place. Lots of tank space in his basement!
I actually am a big fan of the Gold rams as well. Very shiny with hints of cream and blue in the bodies. I don't know why people don't want them. I think they're highly underrated and I've been tossing a few in for free when I ship a box out.

I will bet Jack does have plenty of room! Odd he can't get them to breed there.

A few, plus I gave him about 15 of my fry. His aren't growing much either. His main focus right now is shrimp and plecos. I think the fire made him re-think his fish plan into a more maintenance friendly hobby. I'm sure he had over 100k invested in his old fish room. What a devastating loss! He started back up with a few tanks but it's growing, and growing, and growing... Fish of some sort will always be in blood ...
Yep.. we all seem to have that fish blood disease.

I really don't know if anyone would be willing to pay the money for an all black discus but I could be wrong, I wouldn't think they would be pretty.
I have seen the midnight blue Discus, so dark it looks black with its bright red eyes. Unfortunately it was stolen.

I think a black discus with some blue or orange would look really striking. I always wondered why people dislike the blue x pigeon crosses or heavily peppered pigeons because some of those with a lot of black might look very interesting and maybe produce something like an almost-black discus if combined selectively? Maybe even solid blacks? I have one like that and colour-wise he's my favourite. I could easily imagine a similar fish with more black becoming popular.

/edit... sorry for changing the pics... the colour changes so much depending on lighting, it's hard to get a good picture of his "real" colour. he's usually a bit darker and the bars don't show except occasionally.

Historically, black variants have done exceedingly well in our bobby--Mollies, Angelfish, Goldfish, Rams etc. The only difference for Discus might be that for this species black is uniquely associated with illness and death.
Im not opposed to peppering on some strains. I remember when that was the norm for pigeons
AL4PBXAL.JPG.
Unforunately peppering just didnt go over well once cleaner strains came out. Its all about market demand.
Ps..your pigeon is a fine looking discus..actually. very unique.
