Re: Acarichthys heckelii Threadfin Acara Classification
One of my favorites. I have kept them many times and they are a stunning fish. They really are not suitable for a discus tank though.... threadfins are really beatiful fish. A real joy to keep.I have only kept wild ones.

Hey Al thanks for the input.
Why do you feel they are no good with discus ?

Re: Acarichthys heckelii Threadfin Acara Classification
Too big, too aggressive at feeding time and too active
They can also be aggressive towards other threadfins in their tanks as adults and that spooks the discus.

Thanks Al. I thought they only get to 6" or so?
While I was away on my time out I added three to my while tank they are growing really well they eat really well but they've been really peaceful and don't seem to bother anybody they sometimes hang out together other times they all kind of section off they have been growing like weeds though. I guess I'll see what happens and I may have to rehome them or start a different tank for them as I have become very fond of them

Re: Acarichthys heckelii Threadfin Acara Classification
Hi I've had them with my discus a few years ago. They were fine with my discus when they were 2inch juveniles but when they reached around 4inches or so the males started getting aggressive toward each other so I had to remove them from all the action. They also become food hogs!!! Now I have them with my angels with no problem. But they are beautiful fish. I currently have a few of the geo red tapajo's with my Discus and they are more calm and seem to stay towards the bottom of the tank. HTH!!

Is there a way to sex them? If so, how early on can one tell?

Re: Acarichthys heckelii Threadfin Acara Classification
Hey Phillydubs,
I really couldn't sex them till they got around 3-4 inches. The males are bigger and their coloring gets nicer and you will see them start asserting their dominance in the tank. They are not so aggressive that they kill each other but aggressive enough to disturb the discus. The males fins pectoral and anal fins start to turn an orangy color and their dorsal fins start to get longer. I love these fish i currently have them with angels,c.sajica's and kribensis. They all get along fine and need a really big tank when they get bigger!!! Your best bet is to get a group of 6-8 of them.

Hey guys, out of the 3 fish, one is showing some real nice thread fin on the top. the other 2 nothing. They are all the same size. Does this at all indicate sex?

The threads are not indicative of gender. Your threaded fish is probably older or more dominant.
They certainly grow larger than 6" and they are very rough on each other. Even in a 6' tank you'll have trouble keeping them together in most cases.

Are Acarichthys Heckelii compatible with Electric Blue Acara? I have a mature female (5-6")

Thanks Ryan, much appreciated.
I just posted a for sale thread for these guys. I am afraid you guys are all right and I would rather part with them sooner than later.
These guys have big mouths and just chomp food and are super aggressive active eaters. They are really scaring off my discus I think and enhancing the issues I am experiencing.

wonder if it is OK to keep only one with discus?
