    Default Aeration with sump

    Hi,

With a sump, do you still require surface movement in the tank to introduce oxygen? Or will the sump introduce enough new oxygen into the tank? Possibly adding a few air stones in the sump too?

    thanks

adding air stones into either the sump or the tank is a good idea, imho, if your changing water regularly and you have a sump, you should have enough but bacteria use up oxygen, warm discus water holds less o2 than the cooler tanks, in a spotless set up with daily wc it might be overkill but i see a lot of experienced breeders do it and it gives added security, so its what i do

my hexagon tank has an internal overflow and that is the only aeration the system gets, the water trickling down the overflow into my refugium. the water outputs into the system are at the bottom of my tank.

as far as system gas exchange, you can accomplish this well enough just by having some surface agitation in your sump, airstone or splashing water works.
