Are power filters such as the Aqua 110 too powerful in terms of sucking the fish against the intake? I suppose you can add a sponge or what ever, but then goop wouldn't get sucked up and away.

I don't know that I've ever heard of a healthy discus having a problem with a HOB intake. Prefilters are a good thing to use with HOBS however, you can easily pull them off and clean them with every WC and reduce the build up of nasties in your HOB between their cleanings.

I don't know about all HOBs, but speaking as an owner of two AC110's, it isn't a problem (unless we're talking freshly hatched discus or sick fish). You should be fine with 2" and up Discus. For small discus, I've kept Discus as small as 1.5" with a Fluval 405 and there have been no problems of getting sucked in. Any smaller than that I would probably suggest a pre-filter just to be safe.

It depends on the size of the tank. AquaClear 110 is meant for larger tanks. Without a prefilter, the intake will suck up food also.

The great thing about AquaClear HOBs is that they easily let you adjust the amount of flow. I use 2 AC110s on my 90 gallon and keep them both on the lowest setting. On the other hand, I have 4 55s that I use a single AC70 on and run those on medium while I am at work, switch it to low when I feed them then change it to high output for an hour after I change the water.

I use 2 AC 110's on low flow in my 75 gal., with pre-filters, and they're just great.
