I have no ammonia tests that have a ppm...only mg/l
Is there a difference in those readings?

other than how they are written they are exactly the same thing as Steve and Chris just pointed out.
A liter of water weighs 1000 grams.
A milligram is one thousandth of a gram or 0.001 gram.
So one milligram, or 0.001 gram, divided by one liter, or 1000 grams, is the same as 1/1,000,000 which is the definition of part per million......
