Notice in that article that it says "relatively safe." I lost 5 Rummy Noses during a recent PP treatment and personally, I think its too much trouble to bother with when there are effective treatments actually meant to be used with fish. After the treatment, someone told me my tee shirt was in the mail, because I now belonged to the club with others who've killed fish with PP. Never again.

Does PP kill beneficial bacteria?

So Many Fish... So Little Tank Space
Thread ressurection,
First post, and have been reading through the libraries carefully before asking this question.
Since PP is indescriminate and it will kill all bacteria...will it be necessary to re-cycle my tank?
poconogal's response has left me with a very unsure feeling.
I would hazard to say PP dosing is best done in a QT? Or is the goal to purge the tank completely of parasites, and move forward?
pp oxidizes all organic matierial it will destroy your bio. the filtration should be removed only airation during treatment. it would be impossible to maintain treatment with bio still in operation the pp will turn brown too quickly. your tank needs to be as spottless as possible before you start the treatment
I usually remove the filters during treatment. I know some of the pathogens may be in the filter and reinfect the fish. I treat at a minimum 3 times every third day. This process takes care of the problem.
If the filtration is removed then any living parasites in the filter get to live. Proper treatment requires removal of the filter material and subsequent sterilization of the filter.pp oxidizes all organic matierial it will destroy your bio. the filtration should be removed only airation during treatment.
I have seen well established pond filters make it through a 4 hour PP treatment, but I don't see this happening in an aquarium environment. The protocal I use for dosing a pond requires 4 treatments over the course of 8 days.
Potassim Permanganate = this is also good for foot fungus. I heard it turns your skin brown but after a while it goes away.
It was used in the past as an antifungal for humans.
Here's a link to an article by the late Jim Quarles about PP
