Re:Experienced Breeders please Stand up
A quick related question..
When tranfering fry from parents to grow out, what do you do about water parameters seeing as most of you guys grow out in harder and with generally a higher PH..
Do you keep the same stats in the grow out and then slowly raise it.. how do you manage this on a centralised system..
Thanks

Re:Experienced Breeders please Stand up
Once the fry are hatched I start small water changes with my regular water. In just a few days they are swimming in tap water. I have one storage barrel with an RO/tap mix for the breeding tanks only.

Re:Experienced Breeders please Stand up
but what about you guys on centralized systems.. as you will have other breeders on the same system who may not have laid yet??

Re:Experienced Breeders please Stand up
Once they are eating good I start using my R/O waste water for changes. I just move the parents. That is why I use either a 55 or 75. Ask Dennis he has been to my home and seen it.

Re:Experienced Breeders please Stand up
When i move fry i take 3/4 of the water from the breeding tank into the first growout tank. I add some treated tapwater as well at the same temp and ph but the hardness is way higher. This causes no problems at all.

Re:Experienced Breeders please Stand up
What's the typical breeding tank set up(size, filtration, lighting etc.)?
29 GAL TANKS 1 SPONGE FILTER ONE 50 WATT HEATER NOT 100 WATT NO LIGHTS!
How do you choose your pairs? BIG NICE AND ROUND
Do you wait for them to pair up in a group or force two known breeders together? FORCE PAIR
What are the water parameters? PH 7.0 KH 5 GH 5 120mS
How do you induce spawning? W/C W/C W/C
How many of you are using RO/Tap mix, Peat water, or straight tap? STRAIGHT TAP 25% R/O MIX
How do you condition your pairs for breeding (feeding regiment, temps etc) TEMPS 84f FEED 2XS A DAY WORMS WORMS AND MORE WORMS
Do you clean(medicate) your pairs prior to spawning? NO WAY THATS CRAP
Do you use cones or PVC? PVC
Do you use mash to cover the eggs? NO
What do you do after they spawn? How do you treat the eggs to prevent fungus? CLEAN TANKS WORK ALL THE TIME BUT WHEN YOUR CRAZY WITH ALOT OF BREEDERS SOMETIMES FORMALDAHYDE 37% IS USED TO PROTECT THE EGGS AND LOWER THE BIOLOADS IF YOUR BUSY. I USE 1 DROP PER GAL AFTER EGGS ARE LAYED.
What temperature, water parameters do you maintain after the spawn? AFTER THEY HATCH TEMP IS BUMPED TO 86f AND TAP WATER DRIP IS TURNED ON.
WC schedule after the spawn? 30% EVERY DAY
Feeding the pair after the spawn ? what type of food and how often? 2XS A DAY LIVE WORM OR FROZEN.

Re:Experienced Breeders please Stand up
Cary,
Thank you very much for your input!
Are there any special technics to "force pairing?"
I mean, besides selecting the fish by color shape and desired traits, how do you insure compatability. And is there such a thing anyway? I mean is it enough for a male and female to remain in a confined space for a period of time to ensure proper parenting later on?
Thanks.

Re:Experienced Breeders please Stand up
Oleg,
If you are having problems with your pair or pairs just state it. This was a good thread at the start but it looks to me as if you are trying to solve your own problem using a round-a-bout way.

O.
From your questions it sure looks that way. Here is some advice, If you are a NEWBIE then relax and let the fish do the work. Let them pair up natural. It is a very nice sight to see. When it comes to FORCING them, NOBODY AND I MEAN NOBODY CAN force them to spawn. You just change their partners. So for the time being just relax and watch Mother Nature do her thing.

Re:Experienced Breeders please Stand up
Mr O,
Hello for the most part 80% of the time when force pairing
the pair will work out! I never really have problems with pairs not getting along. hell even bonded pairs that were not forced will fight time to time. So IME I would say No to compatability
And Yes to personalities. Also if this helps You understand Me
IMO discus breeding and fry Raiseing is a Genetic learning
Experience by the pair no matter what female or male are forced together.

Re:Experienced Breeders please Stand up
I am not sure I like the term forced pairing.
If I take a mature male and a mature female and put them together I don't force them to breed, they do it because they want to.
