Least desireable discus?

I was reflecting a bit on the quirkiness of fish keeping and how some strains of fish and even species of aquarium fish just get no loving from hobbyists. For instance.. Gold Rams. Of all the varieties of Rams these seem to be the least sought after after. I don't quite get it

but obviously they lack something that hobbyist find as appealing.. This is just my impressions based on the strong interest in black rams, and electric Blue Rams and the steadfast interest in German blue Rams.



Do we have a strain of discus that is looked down on as maybe undesireable? Or the bottom of the list for desired discus? What strain of discus doesn't do it for you? Any particular reasons? In order for this thread to answer that question you all need to do more than read.. you need to.trash your least favorite discus strain.

I've always found the Gold, Electric Blue, and Dutch or German Rams to be prettier than the Black. But the Blacks bring the bucks.

As far as Discus, I'm not fond of any orange/red Discus like PB's, which with today's extreme hormoning has come to include what were once the brown based reds.

I think for me the ghost strain is my least favorite. Supposedly it's a useful strain for breeding purposes but It really just does nothing for me. I'm fairly sure I never had one so its not like I ever gave them a chance to grow on me.

After that. I have to agree with Pat.. No bulldogs for me. Whereas the Ghost Discus I just have zero interest in... The bulldogs hit a raw note in my discus keeping ethos. I can't stand bulldog discus..sorry if anyone likes them .

Agree on the ghost strain too Al but I suppose it has it's uses.

Bulldogs are an abomination. Ghost Discus look like something that's been dead for a while.

I think one reason people don't care for the gold rams is because until they color up, after nearly a year, they just look like goldfish. Just a guess but I really like them.

As far as discus go, I would never have a bulldog or anything with pepper...

I’ve got a ghost. IMG_0805.jpg. Was going to say I like it. But I had to go back to 22 to find a picture. So not so much! Bulldogs or any deformed fish sold for its deformity I don’t care for. But gold rams are my favorite!

Have to agree with Brian - with the quality of some breeders being able to selectively remove the peppering, I'd have to say any peppered discus as well. Apologies to those of you who like them!

If I had to choose a specific strain, the "Mercury" discus strain doesn't do it at all for me.

I actually kind of like ghosts in their purest form.

I like all the rams, but my favorite is the wild German Ram. I agree, bulldog discus look appalling. I probably wouldn't buy discus from a breeder that breeds these on purpose. Knowing that some of the same spawn that looks normal may be sold and the gene goes along with them and keeps being passed on. Of all the deformed fish sold these days discus would be my least favorite. To take a beautiful discus and turn it into an odd ugly thing is not my up of tea.
