    Young black rat snake
. Harmless unless you are a rodent or bird.

Probably been hanging out there awhile.

Carrie isnt afraid of snakes... especially rat snakes since I breed them and have for years. But still it definitely surprised her. The snake is shedding so is pretty blind and was just as startled.

When she first told me about him I thought it was probably the large old Rat snake who every year winds up in our chicken coops stuffed with eggs. I was actually happy this one was a youngster. I used to see alot more of these but they are often killed because the can get kind of big.. 6-7 feet and people are inherently afraid of snakes. Its nice to know they are still breeding here. Now if they would only find their way to the rodents nests near the chicken coops I would be thrilled.

If people had any idea as to how beneficial rat snakes are towards keeping rodents outof their houses and sheds they would welcome rat snakes like I do.

Forget barn cats.. rat snakes are a godsend.

I am sure it was an unexpected visitor. Good thing it was just a rat snake and nothing too serious, here in texas it would have been a complete different story.

I bet Carrie handled it all in stride Al. Was the snake vibrating it's tail when she saw it?
