Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
That really stinks, Al :(
I had good luck with massive metro and cool water for my one case of whirling, but mine didn't kill them quickly. So maybe it was a different type of issue. But it sure looks the same as all the whirling I have seen. Though I cannot see your video without a Flickr account.
Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
This is heartbreaking Al and I can feel your frustration from here. I have been in your shoes and it is not fun. I am hopeful I will be able to help you with your project soon.
Many hugs,
Pat

But it started fairly infrequent as a one-off. Was happening like once a week or once every couple weeks then got more and more prevalent until she was doing it 2-3 times a day. All of this is just when we were home, so it was probably more frequent than even what we saw. So violent that I could hear her when she went off almost anywhere in the house. She's been good for about a year now.
Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
These guys went into fits of spinning.. then lay on the bottom of the tank exhausted or buried into the pothos roots roots at the corners of the tank.. they would dart a little but always ended up spinning. I never witnessed the death... just find it dead within a day of the whirling. I don't know if the surviving green whirled and survived or was just never affected.. maybe its just a carrier. I really hope sometjimg useful comes out of the test fish.
Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
I had that with 4 very nice looking clean PB's. I had them 2 weeks and one by one went whirling and died, nothing I could do about it. I've never seen fish freak out so much. Seems something affected the nervous system. I thought that it was the disease that you mentioned. I know how you felt.
Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
It must have been a horrible experience for you, Al. I hate that you had to go through it. We will learn something if the domestics never start whirling. Not a lot, but something. Tristan was absolutely wonderful. Thank goodness. It was I who recommended him to you.
Your future with wilds is in Pat's hands now. If anyone can breed them she can. Best of luck to both of you.
Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
Thanks Liz. I have no doubt Pat can come thru on this... no pressure Pat. :)
Im still hopeful I can get some wilds in here again this season.
Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
Sorry to hear of your loss, Al. Hope Pat comes through for both of us. I second the no pressure, Pat.:D
Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
That sucks mate. Sorry to hear it :(
Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
Wow ... grieving with you over the loss. Sad to watch the video.
Shout out to Tristan's Tropicals for their above & beyond customer service.
Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
This was gut-wrenching to read and watch. So sorry, Al.
We have all learned so much about keeping Discus--a staggering amount, really--yet we can still be humbled and frustrated by a mysterious and devastating turn like this.
This is anecdotal, I know, but in searching on this forum for other cases, the ones i have found so far all occurred in the spring, March/April.
Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
Thanks everyone. It really is a devastating thing. These wild greens were just what I have been looking for.
Whats really hard for me to fathom is how years ago when I bought and sold wilds I never saw this once in any that I had. It seems more and more prevalent. I know alot of people on the forum that have experienced this and we know nothing at all about the specific cause. Alls there is is speculation.
I think what makes this particularly difficult is theres no warning. They look fine, eat fine, normal feces, no darkening, no slime production, no flashing off things. One minute they are great the next they are whirling.
Re: My Nanay wild Greens ..Whirling Disease
I showed the video to my wife, who is a long-time nurse. She immediately said, it looks like a neurological disease.
