I've been experimenting by using a 50W heater in a 55g tank. So far it works very well. We'll see what happens in the winter time, but I'd sure rather have a bunch of 50w heaters going than the 300's I was using ;D
Brian,
Great post!
I'm already using two different types of condensed foam in my basement, but will give this material a try.
One of the advantages is that it looks like it's much easier to cut up.

Hi Brian,
sorry to hijack your post ;D. Here are what you thought me to do ? How did i do ? ;D Do i pass the test ? ;)
Oh well, that was one of the happy moment, insulated 10 out of 14 of my tanks.
Regards,
Ronny
Close up ;)
Very good, Grasshopper ;D
yeah ... LOL .. nearly all fish died ... but i still have something to proud off ;D :)
Fishless Ronny ;D
Ronny, it looks great, when can you come do mine? Might be some fish in it for you...lol. Working on getting some 75s set up this weekend, along with trying out a new tank rack from Lowes...if it works, I'll post pictures.
Hi Susan,
I am not sure when i can come but i will put you on the list ;D ;).
But when i come, you have to teach me how to paint tanks ;D.
Do you still have those tanks with cute pictures ?
Regards,
Ronny
Cool. I'm going to try this in lieu of the foamboard insulation.
Hi Brian,
Thank-you for the tip, I picked up a roll to try,
right now I just use r.5 foam board on the bottoms backs and sides, I placed r-20 fibre glass in the ceiling joists to hold the heat in the room, iyo is it beter to heat each tank or the entire room?
Yep Ronny, still have the tanks with the different paintings on the bottom. Your insulation looks great, hope it saves you tons of discus money.

Heating the entire room may be a little uncomfortable for you. I'm not sure of the details, but I don't think an 82 degree room would maintain an 82 degree tank. ??? You'd still need heaters in each tank.
Insulating the entire room would certainly help lower overall heating cost per tank though. You may want to talk to Cary about that one. I think he told me he's heating his hatchery...
BTW, since heat rises, I still use 1/2" foam on the bottom of the tanks....
I dont insulate my tanks anymore. My room has 65G tanks with 45G sumps plus a 250G storage tank. To keep the humidity down, there is also a dehumidifier which puts out a lot of heat. If I do not open the windows and keep the door closed, the room temp will be the same as the tanks, 28C. The fishroom is in the basement with the ceiling insulated. I open the windows to get the temp to around 24-26C.
It is cheaper to heat a small room with gas than an electricity. It is cheaper to insulate than not to insulate. ;)
Was at HomeDepot past weekend picking up some water softener salt (thanks Dan). Saw this stuff and bought some. Tried it in a 20 gallon tank used for a sick fish. I had trouble keeping the temp above 90 F before with a 100W heater turned up to the max. After applying the insulation, I almost cooked the poor fish. The temp was 96 F! ;D
