Sponge filters on return line of cannister filters - it works
I put two stacks of 2.5 inch hydro-sponge filters on the return lines of my two cannister filters. I did this to hopefully diffuse current and flow as well as removing more TDS.
I know water change is the best way to remove TDS, but any little bit helps, and the sponge filters are inexpensive and re-usable.

The air driven hydro sponge is in there so that it can grab the beneficial bacteria so I can use it to seed my son's tank.

Hi Dave, Im a little lost here. How are the sponges on the cannister outflow going to lower the TDS?

Catching any debris that passes through the canisters or breaks off from the inside of the hoses. I only clean my hoses semi-annually, and usually have a fine mud in the filters when I clean them.
But mostly I put them in as a better diffuser to control current

Those filters you're using gets rid of total suspended solids (TSS) but not total dissolved solids (TDS) that are 2 microns or less. So, you would need a RO filter to remove inorganic or organic matter that small.

Thanks for the clarification Dave, I thought that might have been the intent but when I read "TDS" I wanted to double check. Wouldnt want novices misunderstanding how to lower "TDS" Total Dissolved Solids.
Mervin summed it up perfect .

yes, thank you... total suspended solids...
seems I have a pleco who is a jerk and got mad when I removed his cave... he now digs in the substrate.....
