View Full Version : Temp and Hatch time

So at 86 degrees my Leopard eggs hatch in just under 48 hours.

I'm suspecting that this is not good.

I think this quick hatch time has an adverse effect on the fry. Kinda like a premature baby.

I've lowered the temp to 84 to see what happens with the next batch. I've had about three batches go nowhere with this 86 temp setting.

Any similar experiences?

Perhaps a little more info is to be appreciated....

I have had two other succesful batches in the past. I'm not sure what the temp setting was - I doubt it was 86.

The problem I'm having now is that the fry don't past 2 days after they hatch. The parents eat them.

They were not eating them before.

I believe the fry are not developing properly and the parents are detecting this.

Will need more consensus on this. Many write ups say up to 72 hours.

I have 5 pair that i spawn often. All my eggs hatch within 48 hrs of spawning and the fry go free swimming 21/2 later. Its like clock work.

I also keep my spawning tank at 82 degrees and after they attach i raise it to 84.

Also many discus will not spawn above 85 degrees. If they do spawn its normaly much smaller.. Good luck pard

How accurate is your thermometer? :D And how accurate is anyone who reply's?

FWIW I spawn at 28.2 C. When I have eggs on the cone I bump it up to 28.5 C. Hatching usually starts at 46 hours and ends around 54 hours.

Celsius? I dont speak that language.

All my Leopard eggs hatch well within 48 hours.

It's not so much the eggs I'm focusing on - it's the short time the eggs hatch and the predictable doom of the fry.

I'm going back to 82-83 degrees and see what happens to the fry under those temps after hatching.

Internet celsius conversion

82.75999999999999

and

83.30000000000001

respectively.

Either way you put it - you are still hatching eggs are a much lower temp then I am. Again - my temp was set at 86.

Have any of you hatch out eggs at a high temp?\

That's what I mean by similar experiences.

Excuse my snob.

Well forget about the similar experiences!

I think I've nailed it - thanks to use guys telling me your spawning temps. I think I was cooking the fry at 86!

THanks again all of you.

I will lower my temp to 82. I beleive that's how I started when my Leopards had a couple of succesful spawns where fry lasted over two weeks.

Ever since my setting at 86 its been all down hill.

I am not sure if it is the increased temp that is weakening the fry, or increased bacteria associated with increased temperature. I have also seen thermometers of by as much as 2-3 degrees, so it can be hard to gauge based on what other people are using as a temperature.

86 may lower your hatch rate some but the ones that do hatch shouldn't be more likely to be eaten. Perhaps the pair needs a break. If you give them a break I would concentrate on good nutrition including, most importantly, live foods. Red wigglers are great as well as live CBWs.

At 86 your fireing up your pairs hunger. I mean what do you do when they stop eating. run temp up tp 86 right.

I cant do worms - allergic. Black worms hard to come by.

I'll see what the next batch does at 82.
