Hey guys,

I have 7 juvies I got from Hans a week ago. All are doing very good and eating well.

I have a question about coloring.

Most of the time darker (black like) discus are considered to be sickly.

However I have two that display their normal colors all the time except feeding time. When they are eating two of them get darker and a little more aggressive too. As soon as feeding is over they get right back to normal.

These are also the two discus that are generally inclined to be darker even when displaying their normal colors.

Do you guys have experiences with discus changing their coloration or shade of color depending on whats going on?

I do know that stressed sick discus get darker but in this case this is when they are the most excited and happy.

They even darken up as they eat out of my hand.

Experiences?

Thanks in advance everyone.

Yup, entirely normal. They can can change with their moods. Some strains can get darker than others and some will never darken. ;)

My discus also got dark during feeding time. Especially when I fed my seafood mix, two got extremely dark and nasty during feeding time. They are now the two biggest fish in the tank.

I'd be concerned if it were the other way around, if they lightened up only while eating, then turned dark after. But it sounds like it's just a result of their excitment at feeding time.

This is where getting to know your individual tanks and fish comes in handy. Each tank and fish comes with it's own behavior, and that can keep you guessing.

Thanks for the answers guys.

Everyone is doing great and of course the Hans fish are beautiful so I didn't think anyone was doing bad. Wanted to make sure though!

What other experiences do you all have with the color changing?
