View Full Version : Cycling a discus tank with amamo shrimp?

Think you could cycle say a 75 gal with like 50-100 amano shrimp? Then when you eventually put the discus in, assuming they are large enough, you have both a temporary live food source and possibly a few algae cleaners that survive the Hunger Games for a while?

Interesting idea, off the top, don't see a downside although my infectious disease knowledge base as applies to discus is insufficient to know if the shrimp pose any risk of illness. Curious to see what the guru's thoughts are.

Thinking thru this, it's probably cost prohibitive on a big tank at $3 a shrimp.

Amanos are tough as nails but invertebrates in general are super sensitive to Ammonia. I have some shrimp experience both fresh and saltwater and my thoughts would be invertebrates to cycle a tank is not a good choice.
