Length is better

Agreed.
Discus prefer length. Tall tanks are more suitable for Altums.

Altums are angelfish....Personally I'd go with the larger capacity tank, the 65 :)

Go with taller tank, I believe discus prefer taller vs wider.

I agree with this also . Although length is preferable the second option here holds approx. 20% more water, and more water means more capacity for toxin delution thus always a better option then less.

I would go with 65 G, more capacity...

one thing to worry about, I have seen that if the tank is in busy area and for some reason your fish are too skittish, they will keep running into glass more often if you go with taller instead longer tank.. with a group 8-10 you may not face this problem...

I'm more in favor of 18" deep tanks. Looking down, the 55 is just a long, narrow alleyway for your fish.

That said, both tanks are a little too big for 2.5" - 3" discus. Smaller discus do much better a little crowded as long as you change water. (If you don't change water, it doesn't matter what tank you use.) I favor the 65, but maybe only half full and you can add more water when the fish looks crowded.

Good luck, Willie
