Hi Alex...I am new to breeding discus. What is your opinion on leaving the tank lights on while the female is watching the eggs before hatching?

I sometimes leave the tank lights on but usually it is the overhead room light I leave on. The natural instinct is to protect the eggs and fry. In complete darkness this becomes hard to do and I believe it can stress the discus. But it isn't just the female that watches the eggs. The male does also. Quite often the male is the better parent than the female. I actually leave an overhead light on at all times, eggs or not. Discus can startle easily and in complete darkness this becomes worse.
